Overview

Burundi is a tiny country in East Africa, bordered by Lake Tanganyika, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zaire. The capital Bujumbura was originally a port on Lake Tanganyika and it grew into one of the busiest cities in the country. The country became independent in 1962. The main languages spoken here are Kirundi, Swahili, and French. This country is known as the "Switzerland of Africa" for its mild and temperate climate.

Activities & Attractions

The capital city of Bujumbura offers many enjoyable activities to its visitors. Since it is near Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world, it provides plenty of opportunities for fishing. Water skiing and sailing are also popular lakeside activities, with designated areas on the lake set aside for swimmers. There are plenty of other activities for visitors to this country like tennis, horse riding, golf, volley ball, and bowling. The city also has an active night life. Reptile Park, Musee Vivant, and the Geological Museum of Burundi are some popular attractions in the city.

Wildlife enthusiasts can visit the National Park of Rusizi, Forests of Congo-Nile Ridge and Ruvubyu, National Park of Kibira, and National Park of Ruvubu. An ideal way to see the wildlife and beautiful sights of Burundi is on a tour. You can join a seven-day tour or two-week tour and visit the forests and national parks to view the diverse wildlife in the country.

You can also visit the northeast region of Burundi, which has extensive lakes. The lakes such as Cohoha, Kacamirinda, and Kanzigiri are places that are well known for bird watching. When you visit this place, you can also watch the performances of the Intore dancers.

If you visit Gitega, you can see the National Museum and the craft ware villages. The National Museum has a wonderful collection of exhibits that show the custom and traditions of Burundi. You can also visit the Gitega Art School where students produce craft work such as ceramics, sculptures, wood carvings, wickerwork, bead work, and paintings.

Lodging

There are many lodging options available in different budgets. You can choose to stay in expensive five star hotels or affordable hotels. Novotel Bujumbra, Club du Lac Tanganyika, Albatros, Hotel Metropole, and Karibu Hotel are some famous hotels in the country.

Transportation

Mini busses are the most popular form of public transportation. They are not considered safe, especially at night. It is preferable to travel around the country as a part of an established tour with a guide. You can also travel in cars or trucks around the country.
