Overview
The Republic of Cameroon is a country in central and western Africa. Cameroon is surrounded by Chad, Gabon, Nigeria, Central Africa Republic (CAR), Equatorial Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is called "Africa in miniature" for its varied landscapes and diverse culture. The local tribes, Muslims, and Pygmies add variety to the culture of the country. Volcanic mountains are seen in the southwest and northwest part of the country. You can see tropical rainforests and golden beaches in the southern part of Cameroon. The northern part of Cameroon has deserts, lakes, and savannah grasslands.
Activities & Attractions
Cameroon is home to some of the oldest rainforests on the continent and the highest point in West Africa, which is the live volcano Mt. Cameroon. This region has grasslands, mountain ranges, and the Park National de Waza, which is full of native wildlife and elephants. Other destinations in Cameroon include gorgeous beaches where you can sunbathe or swim.
You can visit the Limbe Botanic Gardens and see many exotic plants and flowers. The Limbe Botanic Garden is considered to be one of the top botanical gardens in the world. The Cameroon Art Museum, Benedictine Museum of Mont-Febe, and the Afhemi Museum are sure places of visit for those interested in historical art. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is a famous event in which athletes run up the Mt. Cameroon and back in usually four and a half hours.
Nature enthusiasts can surely visit the Dja Reserve that has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has one of the few remaining gorilla sanctuaries in the world.
Lodging
You have a variety of choices when it comes to hotels in Cameroon. From three star hotels to simple guesthouses, you can find something comfortable within your budget range. The Hilton Hotel, Le Meridien Douala, Capitol Residence, Planet Hotel, and Ibis Douala are some of the well known hotels in the country.
Transportation
You can use the public transport system to travel around the country. Agences de Voyages (Agency Busses) take you to most places of interest. The train service connects most of the major cities in the country. Cameroon airlines have daily flights between Douala and Yaounde. There are also weekly flights to Garoua, N'Gaoundere, Bertoua, and Maroua. You can also travel by taxi or bus taxi in the cities. They do not have fixed departure times and only start after it is full.
