Overview
The Comoros or the Union of Comoros is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located near the eastern coast of Africa. The country has a diverse society with a mix of Persians, Arabs, Africans, and Portuguese cultures. There are four main islands and many smaller islands in the Union of Comoros. The four main islands include Ngazidja, Mwali, Nzwani, and Mahore. The fourth island, Mahore, is a French overseas community. Women are bound by Muslim tradition and alcohol is off-limits to everyone. The island country has three official languages including French, Comorian, and Arabic. Comoros enjoys a tropical maritime climate and the best time to visit this place would be between May and October.
Activities & Attractions
On the island of Ngazidja, you can visit the Mount Karthala. If you are looking for fun and adventure, this is the right place to go to. You can climb the mountain and go down the crater of the active volcano. The capital city, Moroni, has several beautiful mosques. Nzwani has rich rainforests and beautiful waterfalls. If you are a nature enthusiast, you can trek in the forests to catch a glimpse of the giant bats and a wide variety of spiders that live here and on the other islands. You can also join the safaris and see the wild life at a close range.
Perfume distilleries at Bamboa offer interesting tourist stops. Two-thirds of the world's perfume essences come from the Comoros islands. The clear sea and white beaches are major attractions in the islands. Chindini Beach, Kave Hoani, and Bouni Beach are some of the popular beaches that you can visit.
Lodging
Hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts are available for your stay in the country. They are available for different budgets. You can also choose to stay with local families and pay them for temporary stays. Le Ravinala, Hotel Itsandra Sun, Pension Zilimadjou, Hotel Les Aracades, and Moloudja Beach Bungalows are some popular places that you can stay at on the island.
Transportation
Boats and ferries are available for transport to different islands. To get around the islands, you could rent a car, or pay the locals to take you places of interest for a fare. Hitchhiking is the chief means of transportation on the Comoros islands. You can also hire taxis to go sightseeing. There are no busses or other means of public transportation on these islands. You can also walk to places of interest from the hotels you stay in.
