Overview
Equatorial Guinea or the Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a country in Central Africa. This country was once famous for its slave market. Equatorial Guinea became independent in 1968.This is one of the smallest countries in the African continent and is divided into two parts: the Continental Region and the Insular Region. The continental region includes several offshore islands like Elobey Grande, Elobey Chico, and Corico while Annobon, and Bioko islands belong to the Insular Region. Spanish and French are the main languages spoken here. Malabo, the capital city, is situated on the island of Bioka.
Attractions & Activities
The capital city of Malabo has an extensive daytime market where a visitor can find high quality, local hand-crafted items and fresh food. The beautiful Malabo bay, the Spanish cathedral, and colonial buildings give the area an old-world feel. Above all, the oil-tankers and platforms in Malabo are unnatural wonders that attract many visitors.
The island of Bioka is made up of three extinct volcanoes. You can also visit Arena Blanca, which is the only white beach on Bioko Island. If you come here during the dry season, you can see many varieties of butterflies. Bata and Luba are known for their beaches of white sand. The Luba Beach is well known for the variety of local seafood dishes that it offers. Like many African countries, the major tourist attractions are the wildlife, the beaches, and the lush vegetation. Monte Alen National Park is a natural reserve where you can see gorillas, elephants, and chimps.
Lodging
You can choose to stay from a wide variety of hotels that are available for different budget styles. There are expensive luxury hotels or budget type motels available in Equatorial Guinea. Hotel Bantu, Sofitel Malabo, Hotel Impala, Hotel Bahia Malabo, and Hotel Yoli are some of the well known hotels in the country.
Transportation
Flights are available, that connect the various islands. Minibuses and bush taxis are the major modes of land transportation. There are not many facilities to rent cars, so you have to use the public transport system. Ferry travel is available between the towns and is usually safer than travelling by air. Most roads are paved, though there are a few dirt roads. In the rainy season it is preferable to travel on a four wheel drive. It is suggested that you always have your passport and other papers with you, whenever you travel around the country.
