The Republic of Ghana is a country in West Africa. It is located on the Gulf of Guinea, a few degrees north of the Equator and has a warm climate. In pre-colonial times, Ghana was ruled by a number of ancient kingdoms. In 1874, the British established
a crown colony called Gold Coast. It achieved independence in 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to do so. The name Ghana, which means "warrior king," was chosen to reflect the ancient Empire of Ghana.
