Madagascar Vacations
Overview
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and one of the most striking you will ever see. Known as the Island of the Moon, this breathtaking island is rightly named because the moonlight sparkling off the waves lights up the entire island in a soft, silvery glow. Located on the eastern side of the Africa, its splendid lakes, magnificent waterfalls, and hilly landscapes provide an amazing view onlookers are sure never to forget.
Madagascar has an interesting history. It has fought a number of wars, and despite the transfer of power to different hands, the island has remained largely untouched. As a result, it has been able to build its economy efficiently through tourism and textiles. An interesting fact of note is that there are 18 different ethnic groups in the country
Activities & Attractions
Madagascar is unlike other vacation spots because it truly is a Savannah island. Its allure goes beyond its natural beauty and can also be attributed to diverse number of plants and animals. The varied flora and fauna gives visitors an idea of their evolutionary history. Nowhere in the world can you see such varied wildlife. Near Ifaty, in Southern Madagascar, you can see forests of twisted octopus trees. You can also see bottle shaped baobabs and the carnivorous pitcher plant during your stay in the country.
Along the western and northwestern sides of Madagascar, you can find great beaches. The secluded, palm lined beaches are a must visit for ocean lovers. Nosy Be Island in Andilana has the northern most beaches in Madagascar and attracts many tourists.
Ranomafana is one of the most popular parks in the country and has fabulous forest walks for lemur-spotting. Parc National d'Andringitra is another natural park that all nature lovers should visit.
Lodging
Lodging is comfortable and easy on your pocket for the most part, but prices can vary depending on what type of accommodation you require. Be sure to reserve as far in advance as possible in order to get the best price. Some of the well booked hotels in the country are Amarina Hotel, Coco Plage, Sunny Hotel, and Hotel Princesse Bora Lodge. Check out the Web sites below in the resources section for more information.
Transportation
You can travel to Madagascar by boat or plane. Once you have arrived, you can travel by train, boat, car or taxi. Although the taxis can be somewhat expensive, most transportation options within Madagascar are quite affordable. You can also travel in pousses-pousses (rickshaws) for a taste of the local flavor.
