Overview
A part of the Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is a small gem of a country in Southern Africa. The earliest records of this country dates back to 10th century AD. Mauritius has been ruled by many European powers like the Dutch, French, and British. Many sailors have sailed to this land during their travels due to its safe harbor.
The climate here is tropical. The summer, which lasts between November and May, is hot, wet, and humid. The warm, dry winter generally starts from June and lasts till September.
The Mauritian cuisine is influenced by the Indian, Creole, Chinese, and European cuisines. Mauritius is a leading producer of Rum, which is made from sugar cane.
Activities & Attractions
There are many tourist attractions in Mauritius, including beaches, medieval ruins, wildlife parks, and many religious spots as well. The beaches here, with their pristine white sands and blue waters are a treat for the eyes. The popular beaches include Baie Du Tamarin, Flic en Flac, Cape Malheureux, Blue Bay, Grand Bay, and Belle Mare. They offer a host of water sports and activities including water skiing, boating, swimming, sailing, wind surfing, and fishing. The beaches are also ideal for sunbathing or simply relaxing. The bustling capital, Port Louis is an impressive and attractive modern city. The Baie Beach is located very near the capital.
Some of the other popular tourist spots are Chamarel Waterfalls, Casela Wildlife Park, Yemen Reserve, Champ De Mars (the oldest racecourse on the island) and the Balaclava ruins. Mauritius is also known for the Dodo bird, which unfortunately is now extinct. However, bird enthusiasts can walk this area once inhabited by the legendary bird and also take pictures of other rare birds that live here.
Lodging
It is very easy to find comfortable lodgings in most areas at very affordable prices. The more luxurious lodgings offer the facility of water sports or similar activities. Some recommended lodging facilities include La Vieille Cheminee, Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge, and La Vieille Cheminee.
Transportation
You can travel by car, bus, or train and every option is equally affordable. If you prefer hiring a taxi, you will have to pay around $10-$12 per day, but you may be able to reduce the fares with a bit of negotiation.
