Overview

Seychelles is also officially known as the Republic of Seychelles. It is an archipelago nation comprising 115 islands. Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean to the east of mainland Africa and to the northeast of the island of Madagascar. To the west of Seychelles is Zanzibar, to the South is Mauritius and Réunion, to the Southwest is Comoros and Mayotte and to the Northeast is Suvadives of the Maldives. Seychelles became a crown colony separate from Mauritius in 1903. After independence in 1976, it was declared a republic within the Commonwealth. This country is a world leader in sustainable tourism and attracts many tourists.

Activities & Attractions

Seychelles is a tropical paradise with abundant flora and fauna along with a plethora of wildlife. Snorkeling is an activity that every visitor must experience. Diving is considered the best around; locations near Mahé are Ste Anne, Anse Soleil, Petite Anse and Île Souris. Seychelles is most famous for Créole cuisine and the "Sombre Moutia" - the country's typical dance form. Other attractions include several art galleries, national monuments, national parks and heritage sites. Tourists can take part in activities such as fishing, water sports, guided walks and tours and boat rides. A few casinos in Seychelles are also quite popular among tourists. You can choose from a variety of options ranging from grand hotels and resorts to small affordable guesthouses or vacation rental homes. Luxurious hotels and resorts that are an ideal refuge in the midst of magnificent natural surroundings with exclusive service are available at a premium rate. However, an average traveler looking for affordable accommodations can avail of the family-run guesthouses. These guesthouses have excellent views and are well-maintained. A large collection of villas and beach houses are also available for rent. Some of the well-known hotels in Seychelles are Acajou Hotel, Alphonse Island Resort, Black Parrot Suite and Coral Strand.

Transportation

Getting in and around Seychelles is easy as several modes of transport are available. Ferries run regularly on some of the islands while boats are available to reach other islands. Public transport bus services, hire cars and taxis are easily available. However, you may have to negotiate rates with the taxi driver because the meters on the taxis are not always used. It is possible to hire bicycles on islands that are ideal for cycling and walking. It is rather difficult to hire bikes.
