Overview

The Victoria Falls is the world's largest waterfall and one of the most magnificent natural wonders of the world. The local people of the region call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya." The Victoria Falls is located in southern Africa between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the Zambezi River. This remarkably preserved, incredible waterfall has been an extremely popular and inspiring tourist destination for visitors to Africa and Zimbabwe in particular. In order to preserve the falls and the area surrounding the falls from the threat of commercialization, the place has been declared a World Heritage Site.

Activities & Attractions

A famous feature in the Victoria Falls is the Devil's Armchair. It is a naturally formed swimming pool near the edge of the falls which is easily reachable from the Livingstone Island. People can swim as close as possible to the edge, when the river flow is safe during the months of September and December.

There are two national parks at the falls- the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and the Victoria National Park. The others are the Zambezi National Park on the southern bank of the river, the Pan National Park, and Hwange National Park to the south. These national parks contain animals like elephant, giraffe, zebra, vervet monkeys, baboons, and antelopes.

The Victoria Falls Bridge is a graceful monument that spans the gorge formed by the Zambezi River. You get a view of the river raging through the Batoka Gorge and also a section of the falls on the Zambian side. The Victoria Falls town lying on the southern bank of the Zambezi River is quite a popular tourist attraction. Livingstone is a historic colonial city and tourism centre for Victoria Falls. The visitors can have a fine view of the eastern cataract and the main falls from the Knife Edge Bridge as well as the Falls Bridge.

Other interesting activities include whitewater rafting, bungi jumping, canoeing, horseback trails, river boarding, and river safaris. The attractions found around Victoria Falls are the Batoka Gorge, Livingstone Museum, and Falls Craft Village.
