Overview

Bali is an Indonesian island located at the western part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. From artifacts and fossils found in the area, it is believed that the history of Bali goes back to the ice age. Bali remained fairly untouched by the western world until 1840 when the Dutch began to colonize on the island. There was a lot of hardships for the people of Bali under Dutch rule and some of the original inhabitants even committed ritual suicide to prove their stand that "a piece of paper does not give anyone dominance over another man's land."

In 1950, the Republic of Indonesia was formed. Bali is a part of Indonesia, but there are significant historic, religious and cultural differences between the main islands. Bali has strong Hindu and Buddhist ties in a country which is predominantly Islam. One interesting note is that the Balinese have four basic names for their children: Putu/Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut. If a Balinese has the fifth child, it will be named Putu/Wayan.

Lodging is plentiful in Bali and it is also varied. You can find a simple hotel at a low rate or you can choose to spend your time at a luxurious resort with cottages near the water. Bali has many hotels, villas, resorts, and lodges. The Club Villas, Novus, Amankila, Puri Ganesha, and Four Seasons are some popular hotels in the country.

Transportation

There is a coastal road that surrounds the main island. Taxis are the main mode of public transportation. Of course, since there are so many islands, planes and ferries play a big role in transportation. While in Bali, a taxi or a bus should suffice for your travels. There are no railways in Bali. You can find out more information about public transportation from the clerk at your hotel or resort. They should have the best information available.
