Overview

The Kingdom of Cambodia or Kampuchea is a Southeast Asian country, and Phnom Penh is its capital. It is bordered by Thailand in northwest, Laos in the northeast, Vietnam in east and southeast, and Gulf of Thailand in the south. Mekong River and Tonlé Sap are the two major rivers of this country.

It was on November 9, 1953, Cambodia gained independence from France. But after that, the country has experienced several wars and lost many lives. Peace has come to this beautiful yet tragic land after three decades of war, and the Cambodian people have opened their arms to the world. Tourism has truly taken off, yet a journey here remains an adventure as much as a holiday. You can expect a catharsis of emotion as you tour both the heartbreaking and tragic history of this kingdom as well as the inspiring and uplifting side that is becoming the norm for this country.

Cambodia is endowed with natural beauty. There are celebrations, many activities, and events throughout the year. The country is far from being rich and is facing economic challenges but it attracts visitors who are turned on by the intrigue surroundings of the area.

Activities & Attractions

There are so many places to explore in the Kingdom of Cambodia. If are interested in history, then Cambodia has lot many to offer you. The remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire, colonial French charm, beaches, park, and museum are the few places of attractions. Angkor, Kampong Cham, Koh Kong, Kratie, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville are the tourist destination in this country.

Cambodia is simply a lovely place. It has rich culture and the Cambodian government is keen to preserving the integrity of traditional Khmer culture. Khmer food is one of the major national identities that reflect the ways of life, thought, and mind of the Cambodian people that are hidden in the taste of consumption of meat dishes and sweet food. Coffee and Chinese-style tea are popular in this country. You can find excellent fruit smoothies all over the country.

Modesty is advised throughout Cambodia as far as dress is concerned but knee high shorts and the likes are very much acceptable.

Lodging

Western style accommodations are only available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Shihanoukville. You can also rent out guest houses. Some of the most booked hotels are Veranda Natural Resort Kep, La Residence d'Angkor Siem Reap and Cambodia hotel.

Transportation

The chief mode of transportation in Cambodia is bus and truck, but the Mekong Express has the best reputation for speed and comfort. There are also motorcycle taxis available for transportation. The charge for this is generally around $2 in the town. Boat services are available between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc.
