Overview

Hong Kong is located in the eastern Asia, bordering South China Sea and China. Occupied by the United Kingdom in 1841 and ceded by China in 1842, Hong Kong has undergone many remarkable changes over the years. Hong Kong was declared the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. According to an agreement, China promised that under its "one country two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system would not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong would enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.

Activities & Attractions

There are plenty of tourist attractions in Hong Kong. The most famous place is the Po Lin Monastery with the giant Buddha statue, which is perched on top of the Ngong Ping plateau of the Lantau Island. You can also walk around the monastery and have vegetarian food prepared by the monks. Near the monastery is the Ngong Ping Village. You can do your shopping in this culturally themed village.

Another great attraction in Hong Kong is the Peak. From the peak, you can have an incredible view of the city below. If you want to see the Chinese Stilt house community, head to Tai O fishing village in the north western coast of Lantau Island. Make sure you visit the temples and the market place for a real taste of the ethnic fisher folk of Hong Kong.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is surely a must see in Hong Kong. This unique museum has wax statues of some of the world's famous people. Visitors can take photographs with their idols. Other places of interest that you can visit in Hong Kong are the Hong Kong Disney Land. Mui Wo, Sky city, Asia World Expo, Cheung Chau Island, and Lamma Island.

Lodging

Hong Kong has wide-ranging accommodations to suit every budget. It includes guesthouses, youth hostels and super luxury hotels. Some of its luxury hotels are ranked among the best in the world. Some of the frequently booked hotels are Hung Hom, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon City.

Transportation

Public transport is very good in Hong Kong. You can travel around the city in air buses. Mass transit railways, tramways and funicular railways are also available for your transport in Hong Kong. You can also avail the private transport system to sightsee around Hong Kong. Ferries take you from one island to another.
