Overview

Laos, also known as Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, is a landlocked country sandwiched between Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The culture and history of Laos traces some of its origins back to the 14th century, during the time of the Kingdom of Lan Xang, also known as the time of the Land of a Million Elephants. For many years Laos was a French protectorate before eventually gaining its independence in 1949. Laos has tropical and monsoonal climate, and its capital is Vientiane.

Activities & Attractions

Most of the tourism in Laos is near the Nam Ngum River and in the towns of Patuxai and Nam Ngum. A favorite attraction of tourists is the country's many cultural restaurants that are made of floating bamboo. One little known location is Nong Khai. It is on the border of Laos and most people think it is only a border crossing, but it has an excellent native marketplace.

While in Laos you can also visit Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which houses many old structures and temples. It is at the confluence of the Khan and Mekong Rivers, giving ample opportunities for swimming and sailing. After sunset, you can take a trip up Phousi Mountain to see the view of the city and enjoy the night market.

Another place of interest to visit is Vat Sisaket, the oldest temple in Vientiane, which features nearly 6,840 Buddha images. The royal temple of the Lao monarchy, the Ho Phra Keo, is a museum and contains some of the world's finest Buddha sculptures and artifacts. Luang Stupa is another famous landmark in the city that is worth a visit. Built in 1566, the central structure is 45 meters tall and has the curving lines of an elongated lotus.

Lodging

Hotels and lodging facilities are available for all budgets in Laos. Le Bel Air Boutique Resort and Villa, Mekong Riverview Hotel, Lao Orchid Hotel, and Lotus Villa Laos are some of Laos' best hotels. Transportation

You can rent a car or motorbike to get around the country. Most tourist places are near the river, so you can also choose to hire a boat. It is a good idea to get a native guide to show you the major places of interest.

You can travel long distances in the country by bus or converted trucks. In addition, Lao Airlines is the only domestic airline that connects to most of the important cities in the country.
