Overview
Delhi is the capital city of India and is actually comprised of two parts: Old Delhi and New Delhi. It is one of the two most often used points of entry to India and has a lot to offer to its visitors. It is spread over an area of about 42.7 square kilometers. This city serves as the center of the government of India as well as the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is also a commercial hub of India. New Delhi owes its cosmopolitan character to the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural presence of the vast Indian bureaucracy and political system. The temperature varies from 40 degrees Celsius in summers to around four degrees Celsius in winters.
Activities & Attractions
New Delhi is known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards and has numerous national institutions and landmarks. Hence, there are many cultural activities and sights to enjoy. The ruins of ancient cities are found even today and are a major tourist attraction. Museums are also plentiful in New Delhi. There is the Nehru Memorial Museum where Jawaharlal Nehru lived for 16 years until he died in 1964. The Indira Memorial Museum was built as a tribute to Indira Gandhi.
There is a lot of historic importance attached to the tombs and other places of interests that date back to 1400 AD. Red Fort, India Gate, National Museum, Humayun's Tomb, Gandhi Smriti, Crafts Museum, Jama Masjid, and Qutub Minar are some of the spectacular historic sites in New Delhi.
The Rashtrapathi Bhavan is the official residence of the President of India, and the Mughal Gardens in the premises house plenty of beautiful flowering plants that attract plenty of tourists. It is thrown open to tourists only for a short duration in the months of February and March every year.
New Delhi is also known as a shopper's paradise. You can shop till you drop at the number of shopping complexes and malls, but for the best shopping experience, you must go to Janpath, Palika Bazaar, Sarojini Nagar, and Delhi Haat.
Lodging
There are plenty of hotels in New Delhi ranging from luxury and business hotels to budget hotels. You can get plenty of information on the Internet on the options available for your accommodation in the city that suit your needs and budget. If you research long before you plan to travel, then you can be sure of getting the best deal for your money.
Transportation
The public transport system is quite well established in New Delhi. The modes of public transport include buses, the metro rail (rapid transit), taxis, and autos. The buses are operated by the Delhi transport Corporation as well as private operators. The metro rail service of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is fast, efficient, and reasonably priced, and will comfortably take you to many of the important destinations in the city.
The New Delhi Railway Station is the second busiest, and one of the largest, in India. It handles over 300 trains each day on 18 platforms. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is the primary aviation hub of Delhi and is one of the busiest airports in South Asia, while the domestic air traffic is handled at the Palam Airport.
