Taiwan was initially inhabited by aboriginal tribes but soon settlers from China's Fujian province made this island their home. Today, majority of its population is descended from early Chinese immigrants but there may be Taiwanese with aboriginal blood due to intermarriages.

While vacationing in Taiwan, you must take time out to visit the capital, Taipei. You can also visit Taichung, which has attractions like the science museum, hiking trails, and night markets. Another place to visit is Kaohsiung, which is a commercial and tourism center.

Da Tong, one of the oldest districts in Taiwan, was once home to European merchants. Many tea companies still call this place their home. Stroll through its wide streets and you will spot old style architecture in abundance. The Confucius Temple, the oldest and highest seat of learning in Taiwan, is a popular tourist destination. The structure is now more than 300 years old. You can visit Di Hua Street, which was one of the main trading centers in Taipei in the 1800's. Today, this street is home to a number of traditional shops.

Other popular tourist haunts are the Central Cross Island Highway, the Sun Moon Lake, the Jade Mountain, Hsitou's bamboo forest, the Kenting National Park and many more.

You will find world-class accommodations and shopping in both open air and department stores. Transportation ranges from rental cars to public, mass transportation options. Many travelers prefer to walk and enjoy the stunning natural beauty at leisure.

Taiwan enjoys a sub-tropical climate. The average annual temperate is 72 degrees near the northern part of the country and 75 degrees in the south. The summer spans from May until September. Temperatures run high during this time of the year. Winter is from December to February, and it is mild. The average daytime low is 54 degrees.

The first stop on your Taiwan vacation should be the city of Taipei. The city was first known as a humble trading port. This was over 200 years ago. Now, Taipei is the financial and political center of the country of Taiwan. Under the Qing Dynasty, it became the administrative capital. Taipei is now a bustling metropolitan city that never sleeps. You can visit the Yangmingshan National Park, which is a popular tourist destination.
