Overview

Alberta is located in western Canada. To the west of Alberta stand the Rocky Mountains and to the southeast of Alberta, you can find the Praire and Badlands Flank. The northern part of Alberta borders the various Northwest Territories. This is one of the Canadian provinces that are landlocked. Alberta has a forest area with rivers and lakes. The highest point in Alberta is Mount Columbia, which rises 12,293 feet on the west near the border of the Rocky Mountains. Alberta has enduring ice fields that are spread over 122 square miles. These ice fields release their melted waters into the River Mackenzie and River Saskatchewan, which further empty into the Arctic Ocean and the Hudson Bay, respectively. Alberta has large level plains and parkland that are waiting to be explored. While travelling through the Rockies and the adjoining regions, you can see the incredible views of the Alpine forests.

Activities & Attractions

Alberta is a particularly great place to experience the outdoors. The province is most renowned for the sensational peaks of the Rocky Mountains. These are found in the southwestern corner, offering the traveler picturesque locales, hiking experiences, and beautiful drives. In the northern sector of Alberta, visitors will find a wilderness area with miles of open country where they can drive, hike, or backpack. Alberta boasts of many water bodies, both lakes and rivers. You can enjoy sitting on the shore or go boating in the waters. Alberta is home to four of Canada's most stunning national parks, all of which border one another. They offer a great jumping-off point. The parks, namely, Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho, are located to the south of the Rockies.

Skiing, both cross-country and downhill, is a major pastime in the Rockies during the winters. Snowboarding is also quite popular. Other snow-based activities include dog sledding, skijoring, snowshoeing, tracking wildlife, and building igloos. Longer treks allow the visitor to penetrate deeper into the pristine wilderness. There are excellent facilities for whitewater rafting, fishing, and canoeing in particular. Boats can also be hired privately for recreational purposes. There are thousands of spectators to witness the rodeos sport in Calgary every year. Competitors gather from around the world for the 10-day event that features stage shows, exhibits of Canadian agriculture, and some of the biggest rodeo prize pots in North America. Many other rodeos are held in Alberta. Ice hockey, baseball, and football are very popular.

If you are interested in fossils, then you must pay a visit to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which contains a wealth of information on Alberta's rich fossil heritage.

There are ample lodging options in Alberta, such as quaint bed and breakfasts, inns, gibes, hotels, motels, campgrounds and RV parks, cottages and chalets, vacation rentals, guest houses, lodges, and resorts. Transportation

Many tourists travel in Alberta aboard via Rail or Rocky Mountaineer. There are over 9,000 km of railway line that is operational. Alberta has over 180,000 kilometers of highways and roads, of which nearly 50,000 km are paved. The city is also well-connected by air, with international airports in both Calgary and Edmonton. Flights from Alberta to other Canadian provinces are available from Calgary International Airport.
