Barbados is an independent island nation that lies east of the Caribbean Sea in the western Atlantic Ocean and is considered part of the Lesser Antilles. The Portuguese were early inhabitants of the island and named it Barbados. The name means bearded and it is thought to be a reference to the hanging roots of the famous bearded Fig tree. Barbados has a tropical climate due to trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean that help maintain the mild temperatures.
