Overview
The British Virgin Islands are located to the east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and they are a part of the British overseas territory. The name of the territory is actually just the "Virgin Islands," however, they have been universally referred to as the "British Virgin Islands" since 1917 to differentiate the islands from the American territory. The British Virgin Islands is made up of many different islands including the main islands of Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are also around 50 other smaller cays and islands that are considered part of the British Virgin Islands.

When it comes to activities and attractions in the British Virgin Islands, there is a lot to do and see once you arrive. Perhaps the most popular of activities in the British Virgin Islands are the ones that take place in and under the water. Scuba diving is a great way to experience the beautiful wildlife in the waters surrounding the islands. Brewers Bay Pinnacle has been rated as one of the top diving spots in the British Virgin Islands. It is quite affordable too. Apart from scuba diving, you can also take part in other water activities that include sailing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, and parasailing. Cycling, camping, golfing, and horse riding are some of the activities available to you on the land. For the more adventurous, the option of ultra light flying is also available.
You can enjoy the turquoise beach, which is ideal for sunbathing. The coastline is made up of many bays and hidden caves. They served as a shelter to the seafarers and a hiding place for smugglers in the days gone by. Now, they are available for the tourists to marvel at. A must see attractions in West Tortola Fort Recover, which is the oldest structure in the British Virgin Islands. The Sage National Park provides optimum hiking opportunities for outdoor buffs.

The British Virgin Islands have diverse options available to cater to the lodging needs of tourists. The incredible luxury resorts on the Tortola and Virgin Gorda Islands are quite popular and affordable too, even for an average traveler. However, there are plenty of budget hotels and motels too for people on really tight budgets.
Transportation
When it comes to transportation on the islands, most people prefer to walk rather than rent a vehicle. This is due to the proximity of most places of interest, which can be reached by foot or a short boat ride. You can always use the public transport system whenever you feel the need. Ferries operate within the British Virgin Islands and also to the neighboring United States Virgin Islands.
