Overview
Martinique is an island located in the eastern Caribbean Sea and it is an overseas territory of France. The island lies northwest to the Dominica and to the south of St. Lucia. Martinique is part of the European Union and its currency is the Euro. The official language of Martinique is French, however most people on the island speak Antillean Creole. This island has a unique blend of the French and Caribbean cultures. Martinique is also known as the"Isle of flowers."

Martinique is a paradise for nature lovers. Two thirds of the island is classified as "Regional Nature Park," and is a natural and protected area. This northern region contains old trees, rivers and waterfalls. You can see flora and fauna that is typical to this island. If you visit the southern part of this island, you can find petrified pieces of wood that look and feel as hard as stone. If you wish to explore the unspoiled tropical rain forests, go to Mt. Pelee. The whole island has numerous gardens that have tropical plants that cannot be seen elsewhere. Other sites to be seen include Diamond Rock, Route de la Trace (scenic drive), Balata Gardens, and Gauguin Art Center and Museum.
