Overview
Montserrat is a British overseas territory, located in the Leeward Islands and is a part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The island is approximately 16 kilometers long, 11 kilometers wide, and has 40 kilometers of coastline. The name Montserrat was given by Christopher Columbus during his 2nd voyage to the new world in 1493. Montserrat is now well known as a popular tourist destination that boasts of incredible scenery and amazing attractions for the entire family. The island of Montserrat enjoys a tropical climate.
Activities & Attractions
There are many different activities and attractions available to visitors to this island. Most of the resorts and villas have many attractions of their own that are free for their guests. Most villas and resorts usually have swimming pools and offer different activities like scuba diving and snorkeling.
Fox's Bay Bird Sanctuary is a protected area where you can see many species of birds, mangrove forests, and hawksbill turtles. The sanctuary also has a secluded beach that is ideal for family gatherings. You can also visit the hot water pond, which has a hot water spring that gives out a sulfurous odor. You can visit the old fort on St. George's Hill. This place provides the best view of the Soufriere Hills Volcano.
Another famous tourist destination in Montserrat is the Rendezvous Bay. This is a very unique bay, as this is the only beach with white sand. Swimming, diving, and snorkeling are popular activities in this bay. This island is ideal for yachting. This activity is very popular, especially during the sailing week in Antigua, when people from all over the world come and participate. The ROK event held in the end of April and early May is popular among tourists.
Bird watching is another interesting activity on this island. Tour the northern part of the island for great views of the mountains and the Caribbean coast.
Lodging
Some of the popular lodgings options include private villas and condos that are available for rent along the beaches of Montserrat. These can be a little more expensive than the average hotel but, it is definitely worth the extra expense. If you wish to stay somewhere less expensive, you can consider the budget hotels and motels.
