Overview
St. Vincent is a volcanic island, located in the Caribbean Sea between St. Lucia and Grenada. The largest island is called Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This island is composed of partially submerged volcanic mountains. It gained independence from the British on October 27, 1979. The island has pristine black sand beaches, along with black lava rocks that stretch into the ocean. This unique feature is not seen in any other Caribbean Island. The largest town on the St. Vincent Island is Kingstown, and the other towns are Clliaqua, Georgetown, Layou, Barrouallie, and Chateaubelair. This beautiful Caribbean destination is about 18 miles in length and nearly 11 miles broad at the widest point. The only active volcano in the Caribbean is found on this island. The 4,048 foot tall La Soufriere last erupted violently in 1902. There was a minor eruption in 1979.
Activities & Attractions
Majority of the beaches in St. Vincent are black sand, there are some white sand beaches also. It is one of the few locations in the world that can boast of having both types of beaches in the same country. There are places in which only rocks form a border between the black sand beach and white sand beach.
The island of St. Vincent and the numerous small islands surrounding it offer plenty of opportunities for scuba diving, swimming, yachting, sunbathing and sailing. There are a number of different festivals, musical events and Fisherman's Month (May) that attract a wide variety of visitors to St. Vincent and the surrounding islands all round the year. There are many interesting places that you can visit in the island. The St. George's Angelican Cathedral was built in the early 1800s. It is constructed in the Georgian architectural style with spectacular stained-glass windows. Another famous tourist destination is the Botanical Gardens in the leeward coast of the island. You can find rare and exotic varieties of plants, trees, and flowers here. The garden also has an aviary which houses the national bird, St. Vincent parrot.
