The island is located about 600 miles southeast of Miami, United States, and 50 miles southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas. Their territory is a West Indies protectorate of the United Kingdom and was under British protection since the 18^th Century. It is an island group close to the Bahamas but politically separate. The closest other land masses are the Great Inague and Mayaguana islands.
