Many tourists looking for a Caribbean vacation will find that the Turks and Caicos Islands are a good choice. The island is located about 600 miles southeast of Miami, United States, and 50 miles southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas. Their territory is a West Indies protectorate of the United Kingdom and was under British protection since the 18th Century. Early inhabitants of the islands included the Arawaks and Amerindians, who were slowly replaced over the centuries by the Carib Indians.

It is an island group close to the Bahamas but politically separate. The closest other land masses are the Great Inague and Mayaguana islands. There are eight main islands and more than 20 smaller ones located as part of the actual Turks and Caicos Islands. The region has some of the most pristine and untouched Caribbean flora and fauna.

Activities & Attractions

Some of the most beautiful parks in the world are located in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The islands have the most extensive national park system of anywhere in the Caribbean. Both guided and self-tours are available, and their park system covers a large 325 square mile area. The East Caicos Caves, Cockburn Town, Mudjin Harbor, and Fort George's Cay are some of the popular tourist spots in Turks and Caicos Islands.

Horse riding is offered a many different locations, and there is a host of established trails for the adventuresome person to tackle. There are also guided horseback tours on several of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is an excellent way to see the countryside up close and personal. If you enjoy golfing, there are a number of golf courses that are ranked among the top Caribbean golfing excursions. Some of the most challenging 18-hole courses are found in on the Turks and Caicos and they are well maintained year round. The islands and reefs around the region give an unparalleled opportunity for the serious scuba enthusiast, and there are many companies that give beautiful diving opportunities for those looking to rent a scuba gear. The island also offers eco tours, where you can go with a professional guide who will take you and your group on a tour of the area, pointing out the many species of wildlife, fish, and birds.

Turks and Caicos Islands offer a variety of choices and vacation accommodations for those visiting the place. It has many world class hotels, spas, and restaurants.

The Turks and Caicos is well served by the biggest world airlines and you have car, scooter, and bicycle rentals in abundant throughout the islands. In addition you have plenty of shuttles and ferries that take you all around.
