Belgium Vacations
Overview
Belgium is situated in northwestern Europe and is bordered by France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. A string of historic cities such as Bruges, Ghent, Liege, and Namur offer impressive architecture, lively nightlife, first-rate cuisine, and numerous other attractions for visitors.
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is also the headquarter of the European Union and NATO. The area is famous for its rich chocolate, made differently from many parts of Europe and the United States, as well as its several (over 400) varieties of beer, most of which require using individual, specialized glasses.
Activities & Attractions
Aside from chocolate and beer, the area is famous for its luxurious spas, particularly in the city of Spa. Brussels has a number of breweries and beer shops, as well as beer festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Guided tours of chocolate museums and chocolatiers are available for chocolate fans.
When in Brussels, don't miss the Manneken Pis, which is home of the world famous fountain of the naked boy peeing. There is a museum where over 700 little outfits have been donated to dress him up. You can read about the history of the fountain and see one of the most reproduced sculptures in the world.
One of the most beautiful squares in the world is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring the 13th century town hall with the archangel Michael adorning the top. The Dinosaur Gallery, the Belgian Center for Comic Strip Art, and the Royal Palace are places one should visit when in Belgium.
Lodging
Lodging in Belgium can be unique, whether you choose a youth hostel, a castle or even a monastery. You could stay on a farm or in a bed and breakfast inn, with an average price for a bed and breakfast night's stay at about EUR 55. A stay in a monastery is often more on a donation basis than a required fee, but most propose about EUR 30 a day for adults to stay on the grounds in the guest houses. Hotel Du Congres, Flanders Hotel, Leopoid Hotel, and Sheraton Brussels Hotel are some of the recommended hotels in Belgium.
Transportation
Many international airlines fly from the United States and other areas to the Brussels National Airport daily. You also have ferries bringing visitors from European destinations. There are car rentals, boats, RV parks, and trains available for your Belgium visit.
