Overview
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in southeast Europe that is commonly referred to as the "Heart-Shaped Land" because of its rough, heart-shaped appearance on the map. The country, also known as BH, is located in the Balkan Peninsula. Bosnia is the northern region of the country, while Herzegovina is the southern portion. The country is an amalgamation of the eastern and western cultures, with most towns having churches, mosques, and synagogues.
Activities & Attractions
There are plenty of attractions in the country like historic fortresses, old mosques, monasteries, and Catholic shrines. The Bascarsija in Sarajevo is one of the country's most impressive market centers, with caravans coming from nearby countries to do business. This market has been in existence since the 15th century. The old bridge that joins the Neretva River's east and west banks represents some of the finest masonry in the western Balkans. For those who want a seaside resort vacation, Neum situated along the sunny Adriatic Sea is a popular tourist destination you can visit.
If you are interested in nature, visit Sutjeska National Park, which houses one of the last primeval forests in Europe and is famous for the battle in World War II where the Germans were defeated. It is the highest point in Bosnia, which attracts many hikers and those who enjoy walking.
Medugorje is a small Herzegovinian village where a vision of the Virgin Mary is believed to have been seen in the 1980s. It is now one of the world's largest Catholic pilgrimage centers, as people flock there in the hopes of seeing the Virgin themselves.
You can also visit the Jahorina and Bjelasnica Mountains if you are interested in adventure sports. Both places have popular ski resorts which offer opportunities for skiing in winter and activities like hiking and biking in summer.

Transportation
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a comprehensive bus network. Busses usually start on time and reservations are generally not required. Car rental agencies are available that allow you to rent cars for your travel around the country. If you are adventurous, you can try cycling into the country side. If is safer to stick to established concrete or asphalt surfaces and not venture away from them.
