Overview
Frankfurt is one of Germany's most well-known cities. It is the fifth largest city and the second largest metropolitan area in the country (with over 670,000 people) with world recognition for multiple reasons. Frankfurt has a storied history, much like the rest of Germany and Europe in general. Frankfurt was actually a part of the Roman Empire and it has gone through many phases. It was occupied by French troops after World War I and the city was severely bombed in World War II.
Activities & Attractions
There are museums and many tourist attractions within this city. St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, which was constructed in the 15th century, is the main church in Frankfurt known for its old style and architecture. The cathedral was destroyed in 1867 by fire and was rebuilt in its present style. People flock to the cathedral just to see the beauty of the building itself. Another historic monument is St. Paul's Church, used mainly for exhibitions and events.
The Old Opera House was one of the major opera houses until it was damaged in World War II. It was reconstructed in 1981 and was called "Germany's Beautiful Ruin" until the late 1970s. Now it serves as a concert hall. The Frankfurt Opera House, Roemer, Saint Katherine's Church and Hauptwache are the other main sights in Frankfurt.
Frankfurt is the only German city with a significant number of skyscrapers, which gives it an incredibly beautiful view. There are 10 official skyscrapers, which is actually more than London and Moscow. The skylines of Frankfurt are world renowned for their size and beauty.
The various festivals and events make Frankfurt an interesting place to visit. The Museumsuferfest (Museums Riverbank Festival), one of the biggest cultural festivals in Germany happens at the end of August. Over 20 museums located on both sides of the Main Riverbank in the city centre are open far into the night during this festival. Visitors interested in the different skyscrapers of the city will want to look into the Wolkenkratzer Festival. This festival of skyscrapers opens up many of the city's skyscrapers to the public, along with other attractions and entertainment. The Dippemess and the Frankfurt Waldchestag festivals are two more important city festivals.
Lodging
"Commercial hospitality" is a long-standing tradition in Frankfurt. Visitors could choose from over 70 guesthouses. The choices range from small, family-run guesthouses to huge establishments. There are comfortable hotels located throughout the city and visitors can easily make their choice.
Transportation
Frankfurt has an excellent transportation infrastructure, and the Frankfurt International Airport is a major European aviation hub. Its central location at the heart of Europe and its excellent accessibility by air, rail and road make Frankfurt especially attractive. Buses, taxis, or rented vehicles can be used to travel to different parts of the city. The best times to visit Frankfurt are late spring to early autumn.
