Overview

Greece, also known as the Hellenic Republic, is one of the most popular countries in Europe. People know of Greece simply because of its incredible history. The Olympic Games, which are the most popular events in the world, originated in Greece. Democracy also started in Greece and many of the world's most famous people from history are from Greece. Athens, one of the most well known cities in the world, is the capital, and Greek is the official language of the country.

The history of Greece can easily be found throughout the entire country, including the major city of Athens. There are unbelievable ruins that show the amazing past of the country. Greece was once under Roman rule but the Greek culture had its own separate culture from the Roman culture before it became part of the Roman Republic in 146 BC. This incredibly rich history leads to many interesting attractions in the country.

Activities & Attractions

When people think of Greece, they tend to think about the history, the ruins and the beauty of the populous city, Athens.

The ruins of Greece are some of the most well known ruins in the world. There are many places in both Athens and the rest of the different cities that show the far-fetched history of the area. The Parthenon, a majestic Greek building and Agora, is located in the heart of Athens and could easily be considered one of the most well known ruins in the world.

The Erechtheion is another must-see site as it is a beautiful classical architectural structure of ancient Greece. The Acropolis Museum contains one of the most valuable artifacts of the country.

Athens was the host of the 1896 Summer Games (the start of the modern Olympic games), as well as in 1906. Greece also held its third Olympic games in 2004. Therefore, the Olympic Village and Olympic Stadium (as well as various other surrounding venues) are a must to visit places and tour while in Greece.

Lodging

The hotels in Greece provide modern comforts and state-of-the-art facilities, most of these located in the heart of the city. A wide variety of accommodations ranging from expensive hotels to low priced affordable lodging facilities are available. The Royal Olympic Hotel, the Piraeus Dream Hotel, Athens Center Square, and the Athens Gate Hotel are some of the recommended hotels.

Transportation

Transportation in Greece, and in the city of Athens itself, is very modern. In Athens, the metro is one of the best ways to get around the city. Athens features two types of rail transportation as well as buses. There are usual roads and highways that make it easy to get to and from the city, as well as around the city itself. There is an international airport for those wishing to get to Greece from another country.
