Moldova Vacations
Overview
Moldova is an Eastern European country located between Romania and Ukraine. It was known as the "garden" of the Soviet Union as the country deals with food, which is also their main export. It is considered to be the poorest nation in all of Europe. It was originally part of Romania, but was later separated after the occupation by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II and continues to be friendly to Russia despite having been separated from U.S.S.R. back in 1991. In addition, although the population does not lean towards favoritism on the issue, Moldova has some of the most amiable gay rights laws in the world.
Activities & Attractions
Chisinau is the capital and the largest city of Moldova. This city has a number of museums, art galleries, and historical monuments which offer an outlook into the world that Moldova once was and what it has become. The Natural History Museum of Moldova showcases ancient history, medieval history, and history of Basarabia. Apart from museums and monuments, wine is greatly enjoyed in Moldova and if you have the taste for it, it is recommended you try the different vintages that Moldova has to offer. Another must-see sight is the Soroca Fortress, which is a display of ancient ruins.
Lodging
Moldova has some excellent, although expensive accommodations. You will find four star hotels in every major city, and it is advised that if you are planning to stay for more than a few nights, you should consider an apartment rental as it may be cheaper for you. There are also hostels located throughout Moldova which offer average prices and the possibility of a lower priced private room for individuals who are traveling together.
Transportation
Prices for tickets to Moldova are quite high, and it is recommended that individuals should either drive in or take a train as these are far cheaper. In most instances, you will be able to travel by overnight train for under $40 US. If you are traveling by car, be sure you stop by the visa office in order to announce your arrival as you will be periodically checked throughout your time in the country. Because of this, you need to carry your passport or visa on you at all times.
Public transportation is good in Moldova, although, not always the cheapest. If you can, you should travel by bus in the cities as traffic can be difficult to navigate during high traffic times, especially in the capital. The bus system can take you to almost all parts of the country, and the few locations which do not allow you to travel there by bus can usually accommodate you in other ways.
