Overview
Montenegro is a small place that is overflowing with natural beauty, mild beaches, and clear lakes. The country is located in southeastern region of Europe and north of the Adriatic Sea. Popularly known as the pearl of the Mediterranean, Montenegro borders Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Herzegovina, and Albania. It lies on the Balkan Peninsula in the very heart of Europe.
Montenegro is rich in history and culture which makes it a perfect vacation spot. Its name, literally translated to "Black Mountain," was first granted to the country in 1276. After several battles the country became one of the first independent states in the Balkans. They fully regained the independence in 1965. Now Montenegro is an independent state internationally recognized.
Activities & Attractions
Montenegro offers plenty of activities and attractions to the visitors. The Njegos Mausoleum in Lovcen is the backdrop of the city of Kotor. Lovcen is a symbol of national and state identity. Kotor also has the St. John Fortress and City Walls which are undoubtedly amazing. Ada Bojana is an artificially created river island. The island was actually created by, among other things, a sunken ship. On this island there are many fish restaurants and fishes are caught here by the old time methods. Djurdevi Stupovi Monastery, the Cetinje Monastery, and the Ostrog Monastery, one nestled above the Bjelopavlic valley, attract a huge number of tourists for their valuable exhibits from the medieval period. Apart from the monasteries, there are about 80 caves in Montenegro which you can explore with the help of a guide.
Montenegro is famous for its Tara River rafting which offers an incredible experience for adventurers and nature lovers. The 82km long Tara River Canyon is the second longest canyon in the world after Colorado. The mountainous terrain of Durmitor and Bjelasica are ideal for treks in the summer and skiing in the winter. The Budva Riviera in Montenegro is always a popular destination with sunbathers.
Lodging
Accommodations are plentiful at Montenegro. There are some very luxurious hotels and villas, not to mention the many fine resorts. Since the entire area is seeped in natural beauty, any location you pick will have a wonderful view. The natural beauty of the area is something to behold. You can find really good and affordable hotels in and around Kotor, Becici, Budva, and Perast.
Transportation
Montenegro has a good public transport system with domestic and international airports, road, and rail networks between major cities and towns of Montenegro. You have local bus system, but taxis can be a more reliable way to get around. There are also numerous internal domestic flights between Cetinje, Kotor, Herceq-Novi, Durmitor National Park, and other major cities with good domestic network of airports in Montenegro.
