Overview
Portugal is located in the southwestern part of Europe is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Spain. Its boundaries have been unchanged since the 13th century and it encompasses not only the mainland of Portugal, but also the Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira. Activities & Attractions
Portugal is a popular tourist destination, with tourism contributing a lot to the country's economy. The Azores is a particularly popular area because the islands beautiful natural landscapes make it perfect for hiking and sightseeing. You can discover the Azores for yourself by bike, horseback, boat or hiking. There is a lot of greenery and unique vegetation from the volcanic action around the area, as well as some beautiful and breathtaking waterfalls.
On the mainland, historic villages are among the country's best kept secrets. There are also some castles that have been around for centuries. While in Portugal you can also enjoy the areas great wines and culinary treats.
Portugal is also home to many festivals and cultural activities, including the famous Festas Sanjoaninas, which occurs in June. These festivities date back to the 16th century and begin with a procession of the queen and last for several days.

Lodging in Portugal ranges from the ultra-ancient to the ultra-modern in structure, but vary in history and atmosphere. There are many fine accommodations that incorporate the culture of the land and let you soak in the Portuguese atmosphere. Transportation
Transportation in the country is diverse. It has three international airports, a national railway system, and major seaports, making Portugal easily accessible. Bicycles can be used to visit local places as well as to enjoy the nature of the country. Buses are abundant and cheaper than trains, but often less comfortable. Subway systems exist in the two largest metropolitan cities; Lisbon Metro and the Porto Metropolitan Area.
