San Marino Vacations
Overview
San Marino, a country landlocked on all sides by Italy, is the third smallest country in Europe. Located on a mountain top, San Marino is made up of several small towns. Although a little known country, it has a rich history and interesting governmental practices.
San Marino is a full-time member of the United Nations (UN), International Court of Justice (ICJ), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Health Organization (WHO), World Tourism Organization (WTO), Council of Europe, International Red Cross Organization, International Institution for the Unification of Private Law, and Interpol, among others. It also cooperates with UNICEF and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and has official relations with the European Union (EU).
Activities & Attractions
San Marino is actually considered an attraction of Italy, even though it is a separate country. Although very small, there are an abundance of activities and attractions to enjoy. The beauty of the area is incredible and is surrounded by a wall that portrays a distinctive look with three huge towers that dominate the skyline and overlook the rest of the country. You can buy tickets to two of the towers but not the third, as it does not have an entrance.
Merely strolling along the winding roads and enjoying the spectacular architecture is an interesting activity in itself. The San Marino Grand Prix brings Formula 1 car racers and fans to nearby Imola in late April. During July, the capital celebrates Medieval Days with a week's worth of processions, crossbow competitions, historic games, nightly feasts and other activities. In fact, one of the most fascinating aspects of San Marino is that it still has the look and feel of being medieval. The countryside, the towers and the wall all speak of a time that fascinates most people. You can also peep into the San Marino State Museum, which has many artifacts, architectural wonders, archeological finds, and much more.
The entire area blends in perfectly with Italy, yet holds a mystique and position that sets it apart. The castles that tower over the steep cliffs make the country of San Marino noticeable from far outside. While few people set out to take a vacation to San Marino, the fact is the country is visited by over three million people a year, many of whom come in from Italy to see its splendors.
