Bethlehem Vacations
Overview
Bethlehem, a Palestinian city and capital of the Bethlehem Governorate, is the hub of the Palestinian culture and tourism. It is world renowned, but those who come here are mostly on pilgrimage. You can get to see the old city laid out into eight quarters in a mosaic style where only five thousand people live.
Some people may find the culture and sites interesting, while others may find the shopping opportunities exciting. Visitors will be able to be a part of the amazing celebrations and they will get to see what the shopping season is like at that time of year. The city's main streets and old markets are lined with shops selling handicrafts, Middle Eastern spices, jewelry and oriental sweets.
Activities & Attractions
Tourism is Bethlehem's primary industry, accounting for 65% of the city's economy. The Church of the Nativity is one of Bethlehem's major tourist attractions. Standing over a grotto or cave in the center of the city, it is a part of the Manger Square and the birth place of Jesus. Bethlehem is an important part of many religions. It has a Muslim majority, but is also home to one of the largest Palestinian Christian community.
Bethlehem is the birth place of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Luke. Umar ibn al-Khattab captured Jerusalem in 637. A mosque was dedicated to Umar in the place where he prayed next to the church because he promised to preserve the Church of Nativity for Christian use. A very important and holy Jewish site is at the entrance to Bethlehem, Rachel's Tomb. In fact, Rachel's Tomb is considered to be one of the top three holiest sites in Judaism.
The Christmas rites in Bethlehem are held on three different dates for the different Christian communities living there. A few festivals related to saints are also celebrated like the Feast of Saint George and Feast of St. Elijah. The mother of pearl carvings and amazing embroidery also attract tourists to this city.
