Overview

Jerusalem is a spiritual as well as a sacred center for the three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Due to its scriptural history, Jerusalem has been called by many names including Urusalim, Salem, Mount Moriah, Adonai Urah, Jebus, and the City of David. Followers of Judaism consider Jerusalem to be the holiest city. In addition to this, it is also the oldest known cities in the world.

Activities & Attractions

Famous sites in Jerusalem include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, Biblical Zoo, City of David, Warren's shaft, David's Tomb, Mount Zion, Islamic art museum, and the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. Jerusalem attracts over one million tourists every year, and many of them find themselves enthralled by the different parts of Jerusalem's culture. The main reason that people wish to visit Jerusalem is to visit the Israel Museum, a 20 acre complex with multiple buildings. The items in the museum include collections of European art, Renaissance art, Judaica collections, archeology findings, Israeli art, and much more. The important exhibit that people should see is the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are sheltered within the Museums' Shrine of the Book.

Lodging

Jerusalem offers hotels that cater for every requirement, taste, and budget. The famous star hotels in Jerusalem are located in the New City, just west of the Old City walls. Most of the hotels provide accommodation for business, leisure, and family tourists. Many of Jerusalem's other attractions are easily accessible on foot or by a short taxi ride from these hotels. Some of the options for accommodation are the Givat Ram hotels, Ein Kerem Guesthouse, East Jerusalem hotels, and the Mount Scopus, which is located in the Old City. Cost of accommodation range from 100 USD to 204 USD. Hotel Club, group of hotels, provides economical hotels throughout the city.

Transportation

The egged busses are more common in Jerusalem. The transportation in Jerusalem is set up fairly well but you may still want to acquire the assistance of a guide if you do not know any of the languages that are spoken. Egged bus lines and Israel Railways connect the city of Jerusalem to the rest of the country, and a high-speed rail line to Tel Aviv is currently under construction. Within the city, the roads, rather than the rails, are the primary mode of transportation.
