Jordan Vacations
Overview
Jordan is located in the Middle East and bordered to the west by Israel and to the east by Saudi Arabia. Also known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Arabic is the official language of this country, although several different languages are spoken. Amman, also known as the White City, is the capital of Jordan and a popular tourist destination.
One of the oldest places in the world that has been continuously inhabited, Jordan is home to several historical attractions and renowned for its long-standing hospitality. Although a small country, Jordan has played a significant role in the struggle for power in the Middle East, partly because of its strategic location. Jordan is at the crossroads of what Christians, Jews and Muslims call the Holy Land. Unlike many of its neighbors, Jordan does not have oil and its economy depends largely on services and tourism.
Activities & Attractions
The astounding landscape of Jordan has remained more or less the same over the past 2,000 years. You can visit the old remains of the city or trek along ancient trails and roads mentioned in the Old Testament. Among other tourist attractions is the city of Petra, which is famously known as a rose-red city half as old as time. Jerash is another favorite destination for tourists in Jordan, in part due to Chariot racing that has been re-introduced in the restored Hippodrome.
The south coast of Aqaba has plenty of tropical fish and coral and is renowned for diving and snorkeling. There are several dive centers at Aqaba offering PADI courses, equipment rental, and boat tours. Aqaba's beaches, notably the Aquamarina or Holiday Beach, offer excellent opportunities for swimming. Dolphin, shark and whale-watching trips can also be arranged.
One of the best destinations is Wadi Rum, a vast area of dry riverbeds, mountains, black hills and sand dunes located some 30 miles northeast of Aqaba. Famously known as the location of the film Lawrence of Arabia, its activities include camel treks, jeep trips into the desert, and hot-air balloon trips over the Valley of the Moon.
Lodging
There are several elegant and popular hotels in Jordan that meet international standards and offer all of the modern amenities. However, tourists looking for cheaper accommodation can avail of the many low cost inns and motels. The links found below in the resources section will give you more information on the lodging available.
Transportation
The conventional bus service is quite efficient and cheap. You can also use the taxi and share-taxi services that are widely available. Hiring a car from any of the rental services of international repute is also an option for those looking to explore the country on their own schedule.
