Overview

The country of Suriname has gone through multiple changes and portrays a few distinct differences when compared with the rest of the South American nations. Starting with Dutch as its official language, which is in striking contrast to the Spanish and English speaking countries around it, Suriname reveals a lot of interesting variations. Guyana, Brazil, and French Guiana are the countries which border Suriname. This small country with minimal population was once the colony of the Dutch and English. As a matter of fact, a heavy Dutch and English influence fills Suriname even today. It was granted a limited self government in the year of 1954, and eventually proceeded to gain its independence in 1975 through a peaceful transaction with the Dutch Government. The country consists of the largest percentage of Muslims in the entire South American continent.
