Cook Islands Vacations
Overview
Cook Islands are located in Polynesia, which is in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. They are a self-governing democracy with a parliamentary structure. To the west is the nation of Tonga and to the east is French Polynesia. The capital of the Cook Islands is Rarotonga. The first explorer to the islands was Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira in 1595. However, this Spaniard was not the last to come; Pedro Fernández de Quirós also set foot in Rarotonga in 1606. A European navigator Captain James Cook arrived in 1773 and 1777 on the islands and named them "Cook Islands."
Historically, the Cook Islands were a part of the British territory and then that of New Zealand before finally becoming a self-governing country in 1965. The Cook Islands made a political alliance with China and France in presumed opposition to the governing body in New Zealand.
