Overview

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is one of the places where you can plan a secluded vacation, away from the maddening crowds. The country is located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, with Papua New Guinea to the north and Guam to the south. It is a collection of 607 small islands, divided into eight territories. The capital of the Federated States of Micronesia is Palikir.

The country was ruled by chiefs and was settled about 4,000 years ago. The Portuguese were the first to reach the island in the 16th century. After the Portuguese, the Spanish, who were looking for Indonesia (the Spice Islands), reached the Federated States of Micronesia. The Spanish occupied the area and declared their sovereignty at that time. But later in 1899, the islands were sold to Germany.

The Federated States of Micronesia were conquered by Japan in World War I and later taken over by the United States during World War II. The Japanese used most of the states to harbor their ship fleet during the World War II. In fact, one of the most important battles of World War II took place in Truk Lagoon in 1944.

In 1986, the Federated States of Micronesia was granted an independent status by the United States and the United Nations.
