Fiji Vacations

Overview

Fiji or the Republic of Fiji Islands is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Tonga to the west, Tuvalu to the south, and Vanuatu to the east. The capital of this island country is Suva and it comprises of 322 islands, of which just one third are inhabited. Viti Levu is the main island of Fiji.

The original name of these islands was Viti but was too difficult for Tongans to pronounce so they changed it to Fisi. Later, Captain James Cook renamed it to Fiji when he arrived on the island.

The islands of Fiji were inhabited for a long time before the Europeans colonized it. The first explorers were Dutch and arrived in the 17th century. They were led by Abel Tasman in 1643 and during the 19th century, the Europeans finally decided to settle on the islands permanently. Fiji became a colony of Britain and Indian contract workers were brought in.

In 1970, Fiji was declared an independent state, but the country continues to face civil unrest due to racism.
