Overview

Australia is the right place for a vacation for any kind of people. There are many destinations that are worth watching. One of the most admired vacation destinations in all of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef. Located in the Coral Sea, it is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 3,000 kilometers. It is the world's largest coral reef system and lies parallel to the Queensland coast. A marvelous 65km-wide coral gathering can be seen between the 15km and 150km marks.

Being the only living organism seen from space, it is the world's largest single structure made by living organisms. Coral polyps are very tiny organisms that have built the Great Barrier Reef. It has been identified as one of the seven natural wonders of the world and it was named a state icon of Queensland by the Queensland National Trust.

Activities & Attractions

The coral garden reveals many surprising collections of corals and is said to be the world's largest collection. It includes coral sponges, mollusks, rays, dolphins, tropical fishes, reptiles, and birds.

The reef is a great interest for scuba drivers because of its vast bio-diversity. Snorkeling is a great activity in the reef region. Divers and sightseers will also marvel at the amazing coral formations. There are shallow, calm and protected spots for first-time divers and sites rich in corals and fish life for the experienced. Recreational fishing is another activity enjoyed by tourists. Guided expeditions lead visitors to prominent fishing spots for a unique opportunity.

Apart from all its fantastic traits, it has its own dangers. There are a few species of marine life that are fatal to human life. Some of them are box jellyfish, blue ringed octopus, cone shells, lion fish, stone fish and sea snakes. Travelers must take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives.

The coastal cities have many attraction and events for visitors. Cities like Cairns, Rockhampton, Port Douglas, and Townsville are some of those. You can also find good accommodations here. Apart from the sites in the cities and the reef, visitors have a lot more from the surrounding islands also.

Unfortunately, this natural wonder faces many threats. The climatic change, rise in the sea temperature and pollution from the rivers of Australia are the major causes, as well as a human threat through fishing.

Lodging

Accommodations are available throughout the state of Queensland. Various resorts have also been established on the reef itself, utilizing the coral cays and outcroppings. The coastal cities have a lot of international standard restaurants, and other high-standard accommodation facilities, hotels, motels, apartments, holiday homes, and resorts to suit everyone's needs.

Transportation

There are many daily boat tours and cruises offered to and from local cities. Glass- bottomed boats and observatories are available for visitors to enjoy the reef without getting wet. Helicopter tours are also operated for the spectacular view from the sky. You can also join a cruising ship to see the reef or choose hot air ballooning, and more.
