Overview

The Marshall Islands are among the world's youngest nations. It gained its independence from the United States of America in 1986 and is a democratic country with strong ties to America. The Marshall Islands offer a lush and tropical landscape, which is seemingly pristine and untouched. The country is largely composed of the coral atolls. Made up of five islands with 29 coral atolls, the Marshall Islands are considered one of the best diving destinations in the world.

The Marshall Islands played a particularly important role during World War II, where Japanese forces used the islands primarily as a defense zone against American troops. During the heavy aerial and naval battles that raged at the time of the war, many ships and planes were claimed by the ocean. This accounts for the popularity of shipwreck dives that sustain the country's tourist economy. After gaining control of the Marshall Islands from the Japanese, the Americans immediately annexed it as a territory. The United States of America granted the full independence in 1986 and the country became the Republic of Marshall Islands.

Activities & Attractions

You can charter a boat to examine the beautiful corals for which the country is famous or opt for a cultural tour to visit some of the most popular museums and monuments, many of which pay homage to World War II. Avid fishers can go for one of the many sports fishing tours that are offered on the islands. Over 1,000 species of fish are found on the island. The prominent pearl farmland RRE Mariculture is the largest in the Pacific. The Kalalin Pass is also worth a visit if you would like to visit the coral reef that is often referred to as the "aquarium" for great diving opportunities. Arno Atoll is another must-see diving site in the Marshall Islands. Bokolop Island is yet another diving spot with beautiful coral heads and a variety of species.

Lodging

Lodging is budget-friendly on the Marshall Islands. The country has great backpacking hostels, with a bed available for as little as $15 a night. However, there are many hotels and bed and breakfasts inns that offer accommodation at a reasonable rate as well. Check out the Ugila Inn for a cozy experience ($70 per night) or book a luxurious room at the Marshall Islands Resort for $235 a night. You will definitely enjoy the luxurious tropical experience where even the most frugal travelers can enjoy the stay.

Transportation

Transportation to the Marshall Islands is relatively simple, as most flights to Guam leave daily from Honolulu. There are more than 17 airports on the Marshall Islands. Domestic sea transportation is also quite common and it is served by the inter-island ships. There are plenty of operators who offer their services on the island. You can get a taxi for as cheap as $0.50, depending on the distance of your destination. The highest rate that can be charged for a ride is $20. But beware, as taxi prices are not regulated you could be charged more if you are not familiar and well prepared.
