Overview

New Caledonia is one of the most beautiful countries in the South Pacific. It showcases a glimpse of the French culture in the heart of a tropical paradise. Known as the world's largest lagoon, New Caledonia is made up of three sections: the North, which comprises of over 100 provinces, the Loyalty Islands, and then Noumea, which lies to the south of the Loyalty Islands. New Caledonia is located between Australia and Fiji and is the third largest island in the South Pacific.

New Caledonia was colonized by the French during the latter part of 1853, after gaining it from the British control. It is still considered a province of France, but it will be decided in 2014 whether or not the country is to continue under the French control. Since New Caledonia is still under French influence, you can experience a European feel in this tropical country.

Activities & Attractions

New Caledonia has a lot to offer to its tourists. Whether your passion includes outdoor activities like diving and fishing or you are more interested in indoor pursuits like shopping and museum hopping, you will find something to keep yourself occupied. You can go for New Caledonia's world-renowned deep sea diving or avail a tour package to visit one of the country's many lush and beautiful caves like the Luengoni underground caves, located on the Loyalty Islands.

Tribal excursions are also a popular activity for tourists visiting the mainland located in the Loyalty Islands. Many excursions include nature walks, cultural demonstrations, a visit to the site of the first European missionaries, and even a swim in a local tribal watering hole.

The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, which is a 15-minutes drive from downtown, is a perfect place for the lovers of culture and arts. The Museum of Maritime History, Noumea, exhibits a splendid voyage through the history of navigation in the Pacific. This museum was opened in 1999 inside the surrounding wall of Port Autonome. Although small in size and far away from Europe, Aquarium des Lagons, Nouvelle Caledonie, Noumea, founded in 1956, is a major tourist attraction of international repute.

Lodging

There are plenty of accommodation options for tourists in New Caledonia. You can stay at some of the great hotels located amongst the province. You can pre-book your stay in Gite D'oro Chez Regis, which is a lush overwater bungalow with a tinge of French luxury. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option with a bungalow experience, reserve your stay at the Kodjeue Hotel.

Transportation

The transport facility is not quite widespread and is not very convenient as well, since New Caledonia is comprised of many islands with no connecting bridges. Most of the traveling takes place by boat, and reaching the main islands takes up to three hours per trip. Be sure to check at your place of accommodation, as some of the hotels may offer marine transportation free of charge.
