Overview

The South Pacific region oozes with beautiful islands, each one a lush jewel embedded deep within the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Every island has its own diverse history, economy, and culture. No two islands offer the same experience to a traveler. From the mainland of French Polynesia to the isolated rainforests of Niue, tourists can find everything their heart desires in the South Pacific. If you are looking for a remote tropical island with plenty of outdoor excitement, then look no further than Norfolk Island. It is a gorgeous land, lying to the east of the Australian mainland. This small Island is ideally nestled between the countries of New Caledonia, New Zealand, and Australia.

It was Captain Cook who first discovered the Norfolk Island during his great South Pacific expedition in the late part of the 18th century. He quickly snapped up the island for the British. For sometime afterwards, Norfolk Island remained isolated and it was not until an airstrip was built during the World War II that the country began to use tourism as a mainstay of its economy. The influences of Norfolk's British roots are retained on the island even today and hence visitors can get a taste of British culture right here, within the heart of the South Pacific.

Activities & Attractions

Norfolk Island is an adventure playground which would appeal to the typical outdoor enthusiast. Lawn bowls, equestrian, and golf remain the popular activities on the island owing to the European influence. Surfing, windsurfing, and other aquatic activities offer the quintessential island experience. Surfers can get their kicks at the Slaughter Bay. For safe swimming locals recommend Emily Bay. You can hire canoes and kayaks to explore the glittering blue waters of the Pacific, which you can get at the Wetls-Daun-a-Taun caravan located at Emily Bay.

The history buffs can pick a self-guided Historic Walk. It is a great way to get in touch with the roots of Norfolk Island as well as taking in the lush tropical scenery. From the dinosaur parks and award-winning zoos to the cuddly animal centers and the rides at Pleasure Beach, Norfolk Island does indeed offer a few adrenalin rushing activities. Adults and children will be equally thrilled after a visit to the place. You can think of climbing the working windmills, strolling through age-old castles, or relax in the rose gardens. In addition to the above, a few of the other attractions you can check out include the Bounty Divers, where visitors have a chance to experience this great, diverse diving spot. The Norfolk Island Museum contains many must-see, historical attractions.

Lodging

There is plenty of accommodation facilities available on the Norfolk Island with many of them clustered in the country's center. The more traditional bed and breakfasts can be found along the coast. Check out the Cumberland Resort and Spa for the ultimate in Norfolk Island relaxation (get maximum bang for your buck by purchasing their air and seven night package for just $849 per person) or book a private villa at Shearwater Scenic Villas for the ultimate in luxury.
