Overview

It is believed that the Northern Mariana Islands was first occupied by canoe voyagers some 3,000 years ago. European influences were first felt on the islands in the year 1521, when Magellan dubbed the country the "Island of Thieves." Since then, the Northern Mariana Islands remained under Spanish and German control until the Japanese forces took over the islands during WWII. When American forces ousted the Japanese from the South Pacific, they also gained control over the Northern Mariana Islands, which was then primarily used as a stronghold for the American military base. Today the Northern Mariana Islands have retained their rights to self-government but still choose to remain connected with America.

The Northern Mariana Islands are primarily known for their excellent outdoor and marine activities, which would please even the most discerning outdoor enthusiasts. blue lagoons and jungle preserves add to the beauty of the place. Tourists have the choice of everything from boating, diving, and windsurfing for a thrilling vacation. Be sure to take your thrills to the maximum level by skydiving. The beaches give the tourist a chance to kick back and relax. The islands also have plenty of beach bars that offer colorful and fruity drinks. At night, you can book a table for a dinner cruise either at the Saipan Sea Ventures Inc. or the Stars and Stripes. If you choose to remain on land, then there are plenty of casinos for a great nightlife. The Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino is one of the best as it offers the holiday maker an array of games including slots, poker, and blackjack.
The Island of Saipan also has plenty of attractions. The Bird Island, a fabled nesting ground for sea birds, Managaha lsland, more popularly known as the "Pearl of Saipan" or "Warship Island," and the Blue Grotto, a limestone cave are a few on the list.

Transportation
You can take quick flights from the surrounding countries of Japan, Korea, or China to get to the Northern Mariana Islands. The Northwest Airlines offers daily service to the Islands. Car rentals are a popular choice for tourists, as the Northern Mariana Islands follow US driving laws. However, taxis are a better option as they will take you to your hotel for a nominal fee.
