Similar to the Marshall Islands, Guam, and the Marianas, Palau fell into U.S. hands after the Japanese were defeated in World War II. Even after regaining independence, Palau remains very close to the United States. American influences are still felt all over the country. The official currency of Palau is the U.S. dollar and one of its official languages is English.

Palau is a diver's dream, as the waters surrounding the country have been named one of the underwater wonders of the world. Many tour operators offer daily trips from the mainland of Koror. Activities here include deep-water and light-tackle fishing, guided sea kayaking tours, and snorkeling, besides of course diving. For a great diving experience, the Neco Marine Dive Center is the best bet.

Dolphins are an important part of the marine tourist industry. You can undertake educational tours on the Dolphin Bay and also swim, snorkel, and freely dive along with them. Do not forget to check out the Jellyfish Lake. They are one of the most unusual sites that any traveler can hope to see.

If you want to stay in the heart of Palau, check out a resort or hotel located in Koror. A secluded bungalow on the north or south coast of the country is a good option if you are looking for more privacy.

Transportation

Getting to Palau is easy. Take a flight from Honolulu to Guam and then from Guam to Palau. If you want to tread by a more scenic route, then there are plenty of boats and ferries that ply from Micronesia to Palau. Chartered flights are also a popular choice with many tourists.
