Overview

The island kingdom of Samoa is favorably located in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean. This island, where the Pacific Ocean kisses the reefs, was originally formed by volcanic activity. The volcanoes are now dormant, with the last eruption occurring way back in the year 1911. However, occasional quakes remind visitors and locals of their presence. New Zealand occupied this country during World War I in 1914. The nation gained its independence in 1962. It is home to one eighth of a million Samoans.

Nine islands constitute American Samoa. If you want to get a real taste of the exquisiteness of Polynesian life and a 2000 year old culture, then set out to this South Pacific Polynesian paradise.

Activities & Attractions

Upolu is the most densely populated island of Samoa and it is also home to the capital city, Apia. The only beach in Apia is the Vaiala Beach, which consists mostly of coral gravel. It makes a great underwater park, with good locations for those who snorkel off the beach. Tourists can enjoy a Vailima Brewery tour in Vailima and the Aggie Grey's "Fiafia" at the Aggie Grey's Hotel, which includes traditional song, dance, and additional cultural experiences. If you are a golf enthusiast, then you can visit the Penina Golf Club, located adjacent to the Aggie Grey. This is an 18-hole par 72 course. Dining includes European and Asian cuisines. The Apia Yacht Club and the Rainforest Café is a couple of places you can try.

Take along your board and have some fun on the waves here. If that is not enough, you can pamper yourself with a plush Samoan spa, one of the best ways to make the most out of your relaxing holiday to Samoa. If you are out you're your family, you can let your kids have fun swimming alongside turtles. Do drop into the Robert Louis Stevenson's beautiful homestead in the village of Vailima.

Lodging

The Aggie Grey's Hotel is the most upscale hotel of the island. A hamburger stand for the Allies in World War II, Samoa has become the sort of place that is not best for budget travelers. You can expect rates to start at $125 dollars per night.

The Seaside Inn in downtown Apia is the best choice for those on a budget, with a dormitory bed starting at $12.50 and a single room with bath available for $28. Breakfast is included. Other places to lodge on the islands will typically fall between these two, in terms of price and service.

Transportation

You can travel to this island nation either by air or by the sea. The International airport Faleolo (APW), caters to the air traffic of the nation. The main airlines that operate are Virgin Blue and a New Zealand airline which has three to four flights a week from Auckland. If you own a yacht, you can take the sea route as well.

Once you get there, you can rent a taxi or a car. You can also choose to travel by bus or ride a bicycle to get around the city. Taxis are inexpensive and easy to get. They provide the best chance to get around. You also have the option to rent a car after you have obtained a local license, which is quite an easy process. Renting a car turns out to be economically viable only if you will be driving a lot every day. The other means of transportation are equally good for experiencing the island and culture of Samoa.
