Vanuatu Vacations
Overview
In the 1880s, Vanuatu was claimed by France. The United Kingdom also laid stake over Vanuatu in 1906 and together shared the leadership over the island with France. The independence movement in 1980 gave birth to the Republic of Vanuatu. The Republic of Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean.
The island is mostly warm and enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year. However, during the months of November through April, the island experiences frequent rains and high humidity. The local currency is the Vatu, which is worth, as of January 2009, about one US cent.
Activities & Attractions
The island is both scenically as well as culturally diverse as compared to the other regions in the Pacific. All the 83 islands that comprise Vanuatu have varied attractions and activities to offer the visitor. Some of the islands are famous for lagoons, beaches, and an unparalleled holiday environment, while some others are known for their mountainous volcanoes and virgin rainforests.
One of the most worthwhile attractions in Vanuatu is its underwater post office, the only one of its kind in the entire world. You can purchase a waterproof postcard, fill it out and dive down into the water in order to mail it. Experience in diving is not necessary to get started on this. Tourists should also visit the Bluewater Island Resort Aquarium but make sure to wear clothes that you can get dirty in, as well as shades to keep the dust out of your eyes. You can get a beautiful and scenic view of the city of Port Vila and also the jungle surrounding it at the Bluewater Island Resort Aquarium.
Lodging
There are a wide variety of lodging options available in Vanuatu, including resorts and mid-range as well as budget hotels. The most popular resort in Vanuatu is Le Lagon, which also happens to be the largest. It is a popular destination for families as it offers a substantial discount for children. A unique lodging option can be found at the Erakor Island Resort, which is situated on a small island on a lagoon. A free ferry transports you to and from the hotel. There are also abundant budget accommodations in Vanuatu in the form of budget guest houses which offer full service at 2000 vatu per night.
Transportation
The most popular modes of transportation in Vanuatu include airplanes, boats, busses, and taxis. There are several air carriers that operate within the island. There are also several companies that provide boating services between the numerous islands, including Ifira Shipping Agencies and Toara Coastal Shipping. Taxis are plentiful at Port Vila, as are busses and vans that seat approximately ten people each. These buses and vans stop anywhere the passengers require and are easy, convenient, and inexpensive for tourists. The cost is approximately 100 vatu per person for Port Vila travel.
