Buses are one of the most popular forms of public transportation and are available in almost every city and most major towns. Public transportation, like buses, has grown in popularity because it's efficient and economical. The origin of bus goes back to the days of the horse drawn carriage, when "the bus" referred to a special horse drawn buggy. This was used for transport of many people together within city limits. In the recent times, buses have undergone a revolution and offer more comfort and facilities to its passengers. Many buses have been modified as "green buses" that do not cause any pollution.

Buses are designed to seat a minimum of eight passengers to 300 passengers. They are also used for private travel and in tourism. Buses are usually single-decker, though double-decker and articulated buses are designed to carry more people. It is also very comfortable traveling on a bus. The seats are designed for comfort and the buses have plenty of stops enroute that allow you to get down and stretch your legs. Some buses have a toilet and are air-conditioned.

Bus routes are usually fixed and different buses travel in different routes. People who wish to go to a particular place must go by the bus that travels along that place or to that particular destination. Buses usually offer affordable travel to major attractions like museums, parks, stores, and other places of interest. Many tourist agencies arrange for tours in buses. There are open top buses that usually ply around the cities. This is a favorite choice of tourists as it gives a good view of the city as they travel around it.

Buses provide transportation to most places within a city and also connect other small towns and villages to the central city. There are also buses that travel between countries.

Travelling by buses is probably the cheapest mode of transportation. The cost of bus tickets depends on the distance you travel and the type of bus you travel in. Luxury buses are available that usually charge more than a normal bus. You get good deals when you book your tickets in advance, but if you get your ticket on the same day of departure it may be very costly, especially if you are using the Greyhound bus service.
