Atlantic City Vacations
Overview
Atlantic City is a seaside city in the Atlantic County of New Jersey. The city lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast and is a popular resort community. It was incorporated on May 1, 1854, the same year in which the train service began. Atlantic City rose from humble beginnings and contained portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township to begin with. The resort communities of Atlantic City include the south and the north Inlet, Venice Park, Ducktown, and Chelsea. Since the beginning, it has been a popular beach town embracing the Atlantic Ocean.
It is most famous for its boardwalk. The original Atlantic City Boardwalk was constructed in 1870 and it was built to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies. Before the hurricane in 1944, the fabled Boardwalk of Atlantic City was an impressive seven miles. Today, it stretches out for 4.12 miles and is 60 feet wide.
Activities & Attractions
Apart from the famous boardwalk as previously mentioned, other attractions of Atlantic City include ocean surfs and casinos. There are many piers which have become amusement piers along the shoreline, including the Million Dollar Pier, which opened in 1906. Many of the historic hotels in Atlantic City are a must-see. There are some wonderful examples of extravagance and brilliant architecture available for viewing in this bustling city. The Pier Shops at Caesar's, the Atlantic City Aquarium and Ocean Life Center, and the Absecon Lighthouse are examples of a few. Lucy the Elephant is a 65 ton Victorian age architecture that was built in 1881. It is a beloved tourist spot that enjoys a commanding view of the ocean. The Boardwalk and the Pier at Caesars has also turned out to be a Mecca for shopping with shops lined on either side.
The city has been an inspiration for the world famous board game, Monopoly. Park Place and the Boardwalk are the streets in the game and they take their name from the streets in Atlantic City.
Lodging
There are many lodging opportunities in Atlantic City and most of them are at the casinos. For those who travel to Atlantic City to gamble, staying in the hotels there is the most practical option. Besides that, eight of the 11 casinos are on the boardwalk, so by staying in one of those hotels, you get yourself closer to the rest of the action.
Transportation
One of the best ways to explore the city is by foot. Visitors to the place usually park their cars outside boardwalk and prefer to explore the place by walking. There are also some old fashioned rolling chairs that can be hired for a very reasonable fee. The Atlantic City Jitney is also available to run the course of Pacific Avenue which runs parallel to the Boardwalk. Mini buses are available 24 hours a day and you can hop on to one at a fare of $2.
