Lake Tahoe Vacations

Lake Tahoe Vacations

Overview

Lake Tahoe was the home to the Washo Indians when explorers discovered it in 1844. When silver was discovered in the Sierra Nevadas in the 1860s, people poured into the area with the gold miners already traveling to nearby terrains in the Gold Rush. During the late 19th century, logging began to demolish the areas that housed rich forests. After the loss of the famous Comstock Lode that sparked the Gold Rush, the area once more regained its fame for its natural beauty. Lake Tahoe, also called the Blue World, is located where California meets Nevada, and is split into two areas: North Shore and South Shore. Sacramento, California, is situated just below the South Shore.

Activities & Attractions

Lake Tahoe is known for its casinos. You can enjoy gaming 24 hours a day on this island. Most casinos can be found on the Nevada end of both the South and North Shores with entertainment often provided by big stars such as Tony Bennett and others.

The attractions of Lake Tahoe and the area itself were originally built using the knowledge of the Washo Indians, who were the earliest inhabitants of the land; hence, despite the modern venues and casinos, great effort has been put in to preserve the natural and historic beauty of the area. A Scandinavian castle and scores of historic sites and museums are scattered on the land of Lake Tahoe. Also, you can enjoy gondola rides on the lake, boating, swimming, idling on the beaches, and other natural activates such as fishing, hiking, and camping. Wintertime activities include ice skating and mountain resort skiing.

Lodging

There are a variety of hotels, motels, and bed & breakfast locations available in Lake Tahoe. The prices range from $50 for a basic one-night stay without a kitchenette or a view of Lake Tahoe to hundreds of dollars for overnight spa accommodations, with every amenity imaginable and a beautiful view of the Blue World. There are also homes and condos available for rent on similar tariffs and also based on a timeshare basis that comes with variable pricing.

Transportation

"The Most Beautiful Drive in America" is the catch line used for the Nevada end of Lake Tahoe. Renting a car is an ideal way to experience the scenic beauty of this land, and so is hiring a taxi or limousine service. Three international airports serve Lake Tahoe, all of them providing shuttle services to the most popular spots of the town. TART, the Tahoe Area Regional Transportation system, can take you wherever you want to go within the town, charging only a few dollars for a trip.
