Overview
Maine is a part of the New England area in the U.S and it is the eastern most state in the country. It offers an abundance of scenery, from the rocky coast to the low mountains. Maine is well known for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. The original inhabitants were Algonquian-speaking people. Later, the French came here and the English soon followed. Maine was a part of Massachusetts until 1820 after which it achieved statehood. The coastal regions are the most populated and visited parts of the state. There are nearly 6,000 lakes and ponds, around 5,000 salt-water islands, and about 5,000 rivers and streams in this state. Maine has a hot humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
Activities & Attractions
There are plenty of activities and attractions for visitors. You can enjoy the beautiful coastal landscape of the Acadia National Park, which is the only national park in New England. For those seeking natural beauty and solitude, go for a walk on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in the North Maine Woods. You can also tour the 60 or so lighthouses that are dotted along the scenic coastline.
For adventure seekers, Maine offers plenty of activities. Lake and ocean swimming, surfing, hiking, camping, whale watching, bicycling, sea and river kayaking, whitewater canoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, and historical sightseeing are some popular activities in the state. If you visit the state in late July or early August, then you can join the annual Maine Lobster Festival.
The Black Mountain, Eaton Mountain, Lost Valley and Mt. Abram are popular ski resorts. If golfing is your thing, then go to Sunday River, Saddleback, Squaw Mountain Resort, and Shawnee Peak to enjoy golfing in the summer. There are plenty of historic sites in the capital city, Augusta, which you can visit as well. Whenever you visit this state, be sure to taste the variety of cuisines that are made with lobsters and clams.

There are plenty of options for lodging in Maine. You can choose from hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, resorts, cottages, or sporting camps. Hilton Garden Inn, Super 8 Motel, Acadia Inn, and Fisherman's Wharf Inn are some hotels you can check out in the state.
Transportation
Maine State Ferry Service operates boats to several large islands. Busses are will take you to most places in the state. Some buses even connect with the ferry service to islands off the coast. You can rent cars to travel to various places of interest in the state.
