Montana Vacations
Overview
The United States acquired the Montana territory in 1803. It was a part of the deal that Thomas Jefferson made when he paid Napoleon Bonaparte $15 million for the land that is now Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Montana. Montana became a state in 1889 which made it the 41st state in the Union. The Montana State is nicknamed the "Treasure State" and their Motto is "Gold and Silver." Land of Shining Mountains and Big Sky Country are other nicknames of this state. Montana comes from a Spanish word that means mountains.
Activities & Attractions
There are many attractions in Montana, not the least of which is the historic sites and forts scattered throughout the State. Montana also has its own ghost town, Bannack. Once a lawless town, it is now a state park located southwest of Dillon with some of the original structures still in good condition. There are several wildlife sanctuaries in the state. A very popular tourist attraction in Montana is the Yellowstone National Park. Three of the five entrances to the park are located in this state. This park has more geysers and hot springs than those in the whole world put together.
Glacier National Park in northwest Montana, Kootenai National Park, Canyon Ferry Lake, and Lewis and Clark Caverns are other popular tourist destinations that you can visit in the state. Driving on the Beartooth Highway is quite exciting because it begins southwest of Billings in Montana and winds through Montana and Wyoming, finally ending around Cooke City in Montana. As you drive on the highway, you can see many beautiful views, visit the Yellowstone National Park, and go hiking on the mountains. Campsites are dotted along the highway that gives you ample opportunities to travel at your own pace and camp in these campsites.
Lodging
There are plenty of hotels and motels in Montana. The state also has chalets, cabins, hostels, resorts, Bed and Breakfasts, and vacation homes available to travelers. Camping is always an option to consider if you feel like roughing out in the wilderness. If you plan to stay at any lodging besides a hotel or motel it is advised that you make arrangements ahead of time especially in warmer weather. Holiday Inn Grand Montana, Quality Inn Homestead Park, Country Inns and Suites, and Crowne Plaza Hotels are some places you can stay in when you are in the state.
Transportation
The local railway transport or Amtrack connects most places around the city. You can also go around the state in buses and vans. Planes connect most of the major cities in Montana. You can also go biking and hiking if you are feeling adventurous. If you are travelling by an RV, there are numerous campsites where you can camp in.
